Albany hotels were hot spots during the Swing Era. The Ten Eyck and the DeWitt hosted the more prominent local orchestras. They also hosted bands with some level of national notoriety. Examples include bands like the Gene Beecher Orchestra and the Hughie Barrett band.
The Francis Murphy Orchestra, an Albany based band, played these hotels frequently. Especially the Ten Eyck (pictured left), where they performed in the hotels multiple venues - The Flag Room, The Roof Garden.
The Kenmore's Rainbo Room hosted some local talent, but featured nationally acclaimed bands. The draw was enhanced by the fact that the Room had a national feed into the NBC radio network.
The Kenmore featured the likes of Jimmy Dorsey with a young Frank Sinatra, Cab Calloway, Rita Rio and Her All-Girl Orchestra, and many more.
The Hotel Broadway was notable. Owned by an African American, we found evidence that Louis Armstrong stayed at the hotel on at least one occasion. The Palm Room hosted many acts, including Edna (Rookie) Davis and her Orchestra. Davis hailed from NYC, was an understudy of Josephine Baker in Paris, and performed in major venues in NYC, including the Apollo Theater, The Park Central Hotel, and Edwin Small's Paradise Club.

One of the few, local bands to play the Rainbo Room. The other was the Francis Murphy Orchestra.
In late 1941, Cab Calloway played an extended gig at the Kenmore's Rainbo Room to rave reviews. Here is a quote from the New York Age newspaper (Harlem based) dated November 29, 1941 -
Nov. 29
Cab Calloway has taken Albany by storm, the first week of his seventeen day engagement. No other band has drawn the crowds to the Kenmore where he and his band are playing. Friday afternoon, he appeared at the Kresge ten cent store and he was mobbed for autographs, which he willingly gave. On Wednesday, Bob Murphy, manager of the hotel, took Cab to call on Governor Herbert H. Lehman. In a fifteen minute interview, the Governor showed Cab some of his model ships. He also told Cab that he liked his “Hi De Ho” , that he liked swing music in general and he liked Bab’s music and band in particular. Tuesday evening, we dropped in the Kenmore, through the courtesy of Bob Murphy to hear the band and to see the show.
In August 2021, we had a chance to tour the former site of the Rainbo Room in what is now the Kenmore Apartments. The room has been modified and is now used as a wedding venue.
