Jimmy D'Angelo Orchestra

Jimmy D'Angelo Orchestra

D'Angelo was a band leader in Albany.

In the image atop this page, D'Angelo is the person on the far left. This photo was taken in a venue called Danceland, in East Nassau, NY. Our source for this information is from Swingtime Magazine.

The photo is from the personal collection of the Catoggio family.

The 1940 US Census reported that D'Angelo was 40 years old, rented lodging at 86 Jefferson Street in Albany, worked 52 weeks in 1939 and reported an income that year of $1250. He was married in 1940 and had completed 4 years of school. The Census lists his birthplace as "Italy".

We noted that he lived within a few blocks of other, local musicians. One, Dom Catoggio, who lived at 339A Madison Avenue played in the D'Angelo Orchestra. Other nearby musicians included Mike Pantone at 342 Madison Avenue (directly across from Catoggio), and John Costas at 106 Dove Street. Albany was a relatively small city. We wonder about how much musical interaction occurred between these people.

D'Angelo at the University Grill

The D'Angelo Orchestra played the University Grill on South Pearl Street in 1938 and 1939. The club was one of the more popular spots in the City.
