The municipal area’s economy is estimated to have increased by 6.6% to R10.0 billion in 2021. The manufacturing sector was the leading contributor in 2020 (R2.0 billion), followed by the trade sector (R1.5 billion) and the agriculture sector (R1.4 billion). It is forecast that the economy of the municipal area will increase by 2.5% in 2022 and 1.6% in 2023.
LABOUR MARKET PERFORMANCE - 2020
It is estimated that the Swartland region’s total employed in 2021 amounts to 42 461 workers of which 35 779 (84.3%) are in the formal sector while 6 682 (15.7%) are formally employed, showing a drop in proportion of informally employed workers.
The formally employed consisted of low-skilled workers (49.3%), semi-skilled workers (33.5%) and skilled workers (17.2%).
