By putting optical fibers into concrete, a more energy-saving and eco-friendly concrete is made. It was first introduced in 2001 by Hungarian architect Aron Losonczi. He called it LiTraCon for "light-transmitting concrete."

How It Is Made
How It Is Made
Optical fibers are layered into a mold on top of layers of concrete. The process is repeated so that there are multiple layers of fibers between concrete layers. About four to five percent by volume of the concrete of fibers are added.

How It is Used
Transparent concrete is used for building facades, partition walls, panels, and sidewalks. Some notable uses of the concrete is the European Gate in Hungary, the Stuttgart City Library in Germany, the Al Aziz Mosque in Abu Dhabi, and the Halifax Monument for Fallen Peace Officers in Nova Scotia.
Several manufacturers produce transparent concrete, such as Litracon, Lucem, and Luccon.
