How it Works
D3O is a shear-thickening fluid, or a fluid that thickens when subjected to a sudden force. This causes the polymer chains to tangle up and absorb the impact. Gradual impacts don't cause the same effect, since the polymer chains have a chance to move out of the way of the force.

How It Is Used
D3O is used for a variety of protective equipment, from knee pads to helmets to bulletproof vests. Because it is a shear-thickening fluid, it is pliable and comfortable during normal use, only becoming rigid when experiencing sudden force. This makes it much more comfortable to wear and also provides superior protection.
