A ferrofluid is a colloid, a mixture in which a substance is dispersed permanently in a medium. It has nanoscale ferromagnetic particles, such as magnetite or hematite, suspended in a carrier fluid like water. The particles are coated with a surfactant like oleic acid to inhibit clumping. Ferrofluids don't usually retain magnetism without being in the presence of a magnet.

Ferrofluid was invented in 1963 at NASA by Steve Papell for liquid rocket fuel that could be used in the weightlessness of space. Magnets would be used to move the fluid into the fuel pump.

Ferrofluids are used in electronic devices, as vibration dampers for helicopters, and loudspeakers to remove heat from the voice coil and as a damper.
