Understand what others are experiencing, cultivate empathy, and act to help. We reject labels and categories, focusing instead on humans who deserve empathy and belonging. We generously extend trust to others and work hard to earn their trust in us. We assume good intentions and approach others with empathy, curiosity, and compassion.
“Treat others as you would like to be treated.”
Students will gain emotional intelligence through stories and interactions with other students. We will guide children in learning empathy and treating others with compassion. This category also includes the principles of autonomy and connection - in order to learn, humans need to feel safe; and in order to feel safe, humans need to have a sense of control and a feeling of connection. Our programs emphasize freedom within limits and trusting relationships.
I can choose to pay attention, help others, assume good intentions, and be trustworthy.
Recognize injustice and oppression and work to build an equitable future for all people - starting in our classroom. We practice justice in the classroom by sharing, apologizing, making amends, and using nonviolent communication. We learn how to contribute to establishing justice in society.
“The arc [of the moral universe] bends toward justice, but it only bends toward justice because people pull it towards justice. It doesn’t happen on its own.” (Eric Holder)
Students will learn about injustice and oppression in history and today. Children will practice justice in the classroom (sharing, apologizing and making amends, and nonviolent communication) and learn how to contribute to establishing justice in society.
I can choose to repair my mistakes, forgive others, and stand up for what’s right.
Learn about how our environment works and the beings we share the earth with, and act in ways that respect nature. We respect the places we live and learn.
“As beneficiaries of ... Creation, what shall we do? We should care for the earth, be wise stewards over it, and preserve it for future generations.” (Russell M. Nelson)
Students will learn about the earth and its inhabitants, how different environments work, and how human actions impact the natural enviornment. Children will gain hands-on experience in caring for the environment by caring for our classroon and participating in gardening, recycling, and composting.
I can choose to care for my environment.
Be open to new ideas, learn how to find information and think critically, develop a breadth of understanding of multiple subjects, and think creatively to imagine soutions.
“Perhaps imagination is not where we go to escape reality but where we go to remember it.” (Glennon Doyle)
We believe that humans are born to learn and that creativity and imagination is a superpower. Here at Sunflower, all of the book learning we do helps us to imagine a better future and work toward it.
I can choose to learn new things and imagine a better future.
Keep trying and keep learning, even when it’s hard. We see ourselves as capable problem solvers who do whatever it takes to learn. We fearlessly question, curiously tinker, and stubbornly persist in our efforts to learn.
“Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying 'I will try again tomorrow.'” (Mary Anne Radmacher)
Learning always involves failure and challenge. We practice pushing through difficulties. Kids give and receive support to persist in their goals.
I can choose to do hard things and push through difficulties.
