"The sense of beauty comes from early contact with nature." - Charlotte Mason
The goals of the Sunflower Buds Nature Playgroup are:
to provide the youngest children with time to explore nature,
to experience nature in community with other families,
to furnish a gathering of parents with similar goals for encouragement and support.
Meeting Rhythm:
Gather and Welcome (5 mins)
Nature Walk (20-30 mins)
Nature Journaling or Drawing (5-10 mins)
Free Play for Children and Social Time for Parents/Caregivers (open-ended)
This group will be suitable for toddlers who can walk (with or without assistance) and older. We will walk stroller-friendly paths, but encourage all children capable of walking to do so. This allows even our youngest friends to take ownership of their explorations and follow their curiosities.
After our walk, we will take some time to draw pictures of what we saw. Some children may wish to describe verbally and have a parent record their observations. Please bring a journal and crayons! (Even preverbal children may enjoy recording their nature experience by scribbling, whether or not their art looks like much to us.)
Finally, we will discuss as a group what we saw and/or have a guided activity to help children explore and connect with nature more deeply.
After the conclusion of these activities, children and caregivers are welcome to continue exploring nature and enjoying each other's company as long as desired! You are welcome to pack a lunch and picnic with the group.
