fourth grade

I LOVE “I Survived” books! These historical fiction books bring history to life! They are full of action, adventure, bravery, and perseverance. My favorites include, I Survived the Joplin Tornado, I Survived the Destruction of Pompeii, I Survived the Great Chicago Fire, and I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor. Really, any “I Survived” book you get your hands on will be well-worth reading! Enjoy your summer, and happy reading!

One of Mrs. Timmler's favorite book series is The Chronicle of Narnia by C. S. Lewis. There are 7 books in this series starting with The Magician's Nephew (Book 1), The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe   (Book 2), and The Horse and the Boy  (Book 3). This series is a fantasy series about a mythical land called Narnia and four English children who find a way to travel there. They have many exciting and scary adventures there with Aslan. Four of the seven books were also made into movies for you to compare them to the novels. I hope you enjoy this wonderful series of books.

4th graders who have enjoyed learning about pioneer history and our great state of Wisconsin will enjoy Laura Ingalls Wilder's series. Start by reading Little House in the Big Woods that is set in Wisconsin and continue following the Ingalls' Family adventures as you read the whole series. You can even visit the Ingalls' log cabin near Pepin, Wisconsin, on a family road trip. Keep reading, growing, and exploring this summer!

Mrs. Theis highly recommends the "One and Only" series by Katherine Applegate!  Readers will enjoy the short chapters and creative storytelling from each animal's point of view. These books are full of humor and great messages about courage, friendship and kindness.

Mrs. Friedemann recommends The Wild Robot by Peter Brown.

Are humans and animals the only creatures that can adapt? Roz is a robot who awakes on an uninhabited island. She must do what it takes to survive.

One of Mrs. Nghiem's favorite book series is Harry Potter by J.K Rowling.  There are 7 books in the series starting with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (book 1), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (book 2), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (book 3), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (book 4), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (book 5), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (book 6), and ending with my favorite Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows(book 7).  This is a fantasy series about a boy who thought he was a typical boy and discovers that he is a wizard.  He travels to a magical school, Hogwarts, where he meets his two best friends.  The three wizards go through struggles and triumphs through the whole series and will have you on the edge of your seat eager to start each book.  This series is best for mature fourth graders and fifth graders.  It can be read independently but is also fun to read with a parent.  No matter what book you pick this summer I hope you find time to sit under a tree and just fall into a great book!

Mrs. Gehring recommends No Talking by Andrew Clements. It's an entertaining book about a group of 5th grade girls and 5th grade boys that become so frustrated with each other that they take on a challenge...a challenge of silence! Imagine a classroom filled with kids and no talking!

One of Mr. Jacklin's favorite books is The Broken Blade by William Durbin.  It tells a tale of a young boy, named Pierre La Page, who must become a voyageur for the NorthWest Company to help support his family.  The story takes place during the Fur Trade Era of Wisconsin and ties in nicely with what we learned in fourth grade.  There are several interesting characters and challenges that face young Pierre.  The sequel to The Broken Blade is Wintering.
