First Grade

For 1st graders, Mrs. Schattschneider recommends "We Don't Eat Our Classmates" by Ryan T. Higgins.  This is a great family read aloud or independent read and is the first book in a series of Penelope Rex books that I think everyone will enjoy!  

Lou has an important job...as the neighborhood toilet! Useful as he may be, he gets the feeling that deep down inside, there might be more to him than that. He just doesn't seem to know exactly what yet. When disaster strikes, will Lou find out what he's made of and save the day? Read this book with your family to find out!  

Mrs. Kaz recommends all four of the Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel.  These classic stories that parents may remember from their own childhood can be shared as a read aloud or individual reading.  Each book contains 5 short stories that are often silly or have a lesson to impart. 

Jory John's books are great for all ages, especially K-2.  The Bad Seed book series reminds us to be our authentic selves & can be used as a starting point for positive conversations with the entire family! 

I recommend the Mo Willems books because they are super fun to read with expression! They are also fun to read again and again all summer long! Enjoy!  

I recommend any of the Bear stories by Karma Wilson. They are fun to read, send a good message, and the illustrations are fantastic too! Happy summer reading! 

This book is written in the form of a fly's diary and follows her through a couple of days during the summer months. You will laugh out loud at the diary entries that Fly has written about her summer adventures. Check it out! It has fantastic illustrations, too.

Mrs. Retlich recommends this adorable book, Doris written by Lo Cole.

Being a bright red elephant, Doris is VERY easy to spot. Can you see her?! Exactly. But Doris dreams of losing herself in a colorful crowd. Go on a journey of discovery as one little elephant comes to appreciate being herself! It is such an important message for all of us. BE YOU! (:

The Fourth Little Pig is a great book for families! I love this book because I remember reading it with my family! I especially connected with it because I am the oldest sister to three younger brothers! The Fourth Little Pig gives some great ideas for some summer adventures!
