The window in the pastor’s sacristy illustrates the message in Psalm 1. A man is seated by a river. He is meditating on a message from the book resting on his knees. A lush, fruit-bearing tree flourishes at the side of the river. Growing on the wall by the man’s right arm is a thistle whose seeds are blown away by the wind.
The seated man represents both pastor and every Christian. The Psalm blesses everyone, like the seated figure, those delight is in the word of God on which they meditate day by day. They are like trees planted by streams of water. Their leaves do not wither, and they bear the expected fruit at the expected time. These are the godly. It is different with the ungodly. They are like chaff which the wind blows away. And so Psalm 1 closes with this message: “The Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”
