The middle window in the triad at the middle of the north side illustrates the Gospel for from Matthew 6:24-34. Jesus is seated among devout adult hearers. Birds fly above him, flowers bloom at his feet. A young married couple with child listens in wonder at the bottom.
This Gospel illuminates one of the best known passages from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. He is instructing his followers not to worry. He tells them to observe the birds in the air. They neither sow nor reap nor hoard food in barns. Yet, Jesus says, they are fed by the Father in heaven. Likewise, he calls attention to the wild flowers clothed so beautifully by the Creator. If God cares for these creatures which are here today and gone tomorrow, he surely has more concern for the crown of his creation. The sermon amazed hearers, both young and old. Jesus words were new and fresh, spoken with his own authority, so unlike other teachers, who kept on repeating what they had learned from the past.
