"Mission of the Stem Cells Department is to excel in the translational Research and Innovation. This center focusses on to foster fundamental creative discoveries and innovative research strategies, protect and improve health and, at the same time, to promote the highest level of scientific integrity, accountability, and social responsibility in the conduct of research."
Research and innovation is an integral aspect of modern-day medicine allowing the scientists/clinician to scientifically design and test a hypothesis, recognize uncertainties, widen perspective, resolve dilemmas and understanding divergent options and explore strategic questions. Our goal is to create a network of academically inclined clinicians and basic scientists, so that ideas generated in the clinics can be tested in a research setting. Such a network will help in leading to generation of new ideas and discoveries in the laboratory, which can then be put to clinical testing in patients. This is to facilitate ‘bench to bed’ side medicine and conduct innovative research to generate new knowledge and medicine. Thus, a laboratory research facilitates in bridging the various aspects in clinics, promoting the highest level of scientific integrity, public accountability and social responsibility in the conduct of science. The research and innovation center provides leadership and direction to program, design and ultimately to improve the health-care system.
We have established resource modules within the CRTM that will provide a home base for the basic and clinical research at Dr. Shroff Charity Eye Hospital (SCEH). CRTM visions to establish research facility with state-of-the-art equipments to support basic research as well as promote translation research. The department focus on promoting laboratory-based investigation in multi-disciplinary areas, assist clinicians in pursuing their interest in research by providing sophisticated available techniques, including the methods used in stem cell biology, molecular biology, molecular genetics and protein biology, and provide technical and scientific manpower through collaborative projects. The innovative work held at this centre is in advancing our knowledge of i) corneal cell biology, regeneration and stem cell, ii) glaucoma (trabecular meshwork stem cell biology and stem cell-based therapeutics, and ocular biomechanics), iii) retinal and RPE development, degeneration and regeneration, iv) visual neuroscience, v) ocular infectious disease, ocular immunology, the ocular microbiome, vi) various aspects of ENT research and vii) community research. We focus on establishing a collegial, collaborative and productive group of researchers.
