The d’Deridex-B Warbird SES* S’Task is named after the student of Surak who initiated the schism between the proponents of logic and the proponents of pre-Reformation values and who led the Romulans on their long pilgrimage from Vulcan to the twin planets of ch’Rihan and ch’Havran.
*SES = Star Empire Ship
The S’Task was commissioned in 2398, shortly before the end of the Second Romulan War. It was constructed at the Hnakam Shipyards off Perhonies and was intended for ultra long-range exploration. For this reason, it was fitted with triply redundant power systems: one AQS (artificial quantum singularity), one matter-antimatter, and one fusion.
It was also fitted for dual cloaking systems, the highly advanced Mk 4 and the still experimental prototype-D interphase generator cloak. When it was decided that the S’Task would be the trial vessel in the new Romulan-Federation Accord, the interphase generator system was removed, lest it should fall into the hands of the Federation by some unfortunate “accident.”
Following the lead of such Federation vessels as the Galaxy-class cruiser, the S’Task is capable of separating into two autonomous vessels. The upper part, including the Capital and Dorsal sections, would retain the warp nacelles and become essentially a d’Kazanak-C Warbird. The lower part, including the Ventral and Caudal sections, would become an impulse-powered craft — essentially a huge life boat or a platform for colonization. Separation of the S’Task would likely occur only in a grave emergency or if an extremely rich planet were discovered, calling for the instant “stake-claiming” device of an orbital base.
As befits a long-range exploration vessel, the S’Task has much space dedicated to the sciences and specimen collection. It also has some amenities not normally found on a Romulan military vessel, including a recreational “parkland,” space for individual gardens, and an amphitheater available for dramatic performances and concerts.
From 2398 to 2421, SES S'Task was the flagship of the 6th Swarm. Currently, it is the flagship of 3rd Swarm whose Commander-in-Chief is khre'Riov Celeste t'Pal.
Note: The d’Deridex class Warbird is divided into four main sections. They are named as if they were parts of a great bird of prey, which the ship is explicitly designed to resemble.
The CAPITAL section includes the “raptor’s head” and the “backbone” that connects this head to the Dorsal section. The “head” has eighty decks, twenty of which are shared with the “backbone.”
The DORSAL section includes the upper portion or “back” of the vessel, including the two “wingtip” warp nacelles. It has fifteen decks.
The VENTRAL section includes the lower portion or “belly” of the vessel and the slim “throat” that connects this section to the CAPITAL section. The “throat” connects with the superstructure atop the VENTRAL section which contains shuttle and fighter bays and facilities. The VENTRAL section has fifteen decks, in addition to the five in the auxiliary crafts superstructure.
The CAUDAL section includes the “tail” that connects the DORSAL and VENTRAL sections. It contains 25 decks.
Much of this section is dedicated to high speed horizontal personnel and cargo turbotubes. Some special features:
