The Outreach Team of SPS at UC San Diego is a group of undergraduate students dedicated to bringing awareness and strengthening the community of those interested in physics both on and off-campus. We are especially interested in reaching out to those previously underrepresented in physics and STEM. On this page, you’ll find a list of our current initiatives.
Student Lightning Talks
Interested in learning more about Physics and research? Attend the Student Lightning Talks, where other students will give talks on their personal experiences. Any student with an interest in Physics can participate, and topics will depend on the speaker. They can include some research they have done or an area of interest, as long as it is about Physics. At the end of the event, attendees will have a space to ask questions to the speaker, so they can satiate their curiosity. And remember, we are all students and are here to learn from each other!
Professional Development
Attend our Professional Development series! In this series, SPS hosts speakers and panels with the aim of helping students develop essential skills that will aid in furthering their careers and help them build meaningful connections with leaders in their fields. During these events, attendees will have the chance to interact with our guest speakers and even practice their new skills in a safe and supportive environment. This is a great opportunity for students to gain new knowledge and skills to apply to their career journey! Get insight into and advice on topics such as networking, GRE prep, resume building, and mentorship. We look forward to seeing you!
Outreach to Local Schools
The Outreach Team is currently partnering with physics classes at University City High School to encourage their students to find excitement for physics as well as get to see the strong community that SPS fosters. If you or your school are interested in hosting some of our workshops and demonstrations, please email us at spsucsandiego@gmail.com
Lab Tours
If you are curious about how research is conducted in various fields of physics, come to our Lab Tour events! SPS will be hosting Lab Tours throughout the year. Students will get a chance to explore labs from different fields of physics and see how experiments and data are collected. This is a great opportunity to get to know the structure of labs, the equipment used in physics research, and to gain a peek at what physicists do! Each lab gives unique experiences and insights about research in physics. Come join our Lab Tour events to see how physicists use lab equipment to help fuel their curiosity!
Big Sister STEM
SPS at UC San Diego is excited to announce our partnership with Big Sister STEM. Our hope is to bring this program to local schools to promote the retention of young girls in the STEM field. Big Sister STEM is a nonprofit organization that pairs early-career women in STEM with girls in junior high and high school for meaningful mentorship and STEM exploration. You can find out more about Big Sister STEM and donate to their efforts at www.bigsisterstem.org.
