Effective library media programs provide an inviting, accessible, and stimulating environment for individual and group use that share resources across the learning community.
Southwest’s 8,366 square foot Media Center holds 7,396 current and diverse print titles that meet the needs of our population and school reading initiative. It is also home to a 30 computer lab, a conference room, a maker space, the testing materials room, the Digital Arts classroom, TV studio, the "best" water fountain in the school, student work displays, lots of events and trainings. We offer tables and chairs that are reconfigured on a regular basis depending on the need for the day, a lab, 4 soft seating areas, and 5 window seats.
When Dr. Mullins, our Superintendent came to be Librarian for the Day, he was amazed at all the things that happen on any given day in the media center. Before he left, he spoke to Mrs. Friday about how impressive it was that our students were so comfortable here and so engaged.
He talked about how incredible it was that Mrs Friday uses the same materials to challenge our gifted students and our ESE students. He saw displays of student work including artwork, successful maker projects and reasons why our students love their library. He marveled at the amount of traffic that comes through our space. The last thing he said was that he saw that our media center is truly the heartbeat and hub of our school.
