The library media program and its initiatives are promoted throughout the learning community.
Advocating for the importance and value of the Media Center is extremely important to Mrs. Friday. She has worked tirelessly to build the reputation of Southwest Middle School throughout the community and worked to change the perspective of what a school library really looks like. Based on that work, many opportunities have been presented including platforms through being a Brevard Public Schools Teacher of the Year Finalist, being filmed for an episode of Kwame Alexander's Bookish, and most recently, the Space Coast Pubic Service Heavy Lifting Award. While awards are wonderful, Mrs. Friday has used these things to share with the public all the wonderful things happening in the Media Center at The Great Southwest. Mrs. Friday also started writing a personal blog to share the adventures of the Media Center that has reached many different countries. She entered Southwest into the Follett Challenge where the video of our #swms20bookchallenge has been seen all over the United States. Mrs. Friday shares lessons on Twitter with companies like Ozobot, Scholastic, and Twitter retweeting and sharing. Mrs. Friday has also worked hard to build a community of authors who are invested in the Media Center program at The Great Southwest. This has provided many opportunities to our students for free or at severely discounted rates.
Mrs. Friday regularly invites District Leadership and the community into the Media Center. Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Mullins and Assistant Superintendent have both been Librarians for the Day at The Great Southwest to build awareness of the program and build relationships with District Leadership. Follett, Scholastic, Gale, and many other companies are regular visitors to our library to see and share what's going on. Mrs. Friday has also written blog posts for Follett Community about the importance of advocacy with District Leadership.
