"South Miami Junior High School opened it's door in February, 1956 with Dr. Eugene Kitching as the first principal. In 1962 with integration, the first Hispanic students enrolled in the school and in 1963 the first Black students were integrated to the school. In 1964 South Miami Junior High became a Community School, offering after-school classes to students and adults. Over the years, South Miami student attendance fluctuated from the high 500s to over 1200; however, during one of the lowest enrollment years 1987, the principal Mr. Henry Pollock, along with staff developed the first Magnet Program for the school Broadcast. The following year, other various arts classes were initiated and the school enrollment increased to over 1100 students. South Miami was one of the first Magnet Public Schools. In 1992, South Miami became a 'Middle School' and in 2002 the school received a new 'building' to assist with the student enrollment. Today, South Miami Middle Community School is proud to serve a diverse community offering eight specialized visual and performing arts magnet programs."
