The mission of the student services department at South Miami Middle Community School is to provide a proactive, culturally aware, and developmentally appropriate comprehensive program that addresses our diverse students’ academic goals, college/career goals, and emotional/social growth. This is accomplished through a partnership with parents/guardians, school staff, and community members to enable all students to become compassionate, responsible, and knowledgeable citizens who are well-equipped to reach their highest standard of success. The school counseling program at South Miami Middle Community school is an essential aspect of all students’ developmental needs. Our philosophy at the student services department includes building meaningful relationships with all students, collaborating with stakeholders, and providing a safe and nurturing environment where each student can acquire skills to maximize their individual potential.
Our program is a comprehensive data-driven program modeled by the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) National Model for school counselors, which focuses on the three domains of academic development, career development, and socio-emotional development. The program consists of multi-cultural and developmentally appropriate individual counseling, small group counseling, and classroom instruction throughout the school year. Some of the themes discussed are character education, college and career preparation, peer support programs, and drug and alcohol abuse prevention. As counselors, we use practices from elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy that have been proven effective in school through empirical data. The combination of these two approaches to therapy enables counselors to aid students in being goal-orientated and solution-focused while improving moods and encouraging positive behavior and thoughts.
We strictly adhere to ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors. The ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors acknowledges our school counselors responsibility to continually implement ethical decision making practices, advocating for students, and maintaining confidentiality. We remain accountable by being data-driven. Our counselors gather and evaluate data collected from our students, teachers, and parents/guardians in order to measure the effectiveness of the comprehensive school counseling program at South Miami Middle Community School.
