We want to maintain and enhance the existing tree canopy in Golden by not removing trees that take many, many years to replace.
According to the 2025 Colorado State Health Improvement Plan tree canopies critical for promoting physical and mental health and equity, improving air quality, enhancing wildlife habitat and increasing community cohesion. The plan also recommends enhancing the tree canopy to combat climate-change related heat problems, warning that "communities with less access to shade, tree canopies, and green spaces tend to absorb and retain more heat, creating what is known as the urban heat island (UHI) effect."
Passing a resolution confirming that the City of Golden prioritizes trees in all areas of the city due to the mental health benefits, physical health benefits, and environmental advantages.
The City of Golden has a pro-tree campaign educating the community, as well as Xcel energy and other businesses, about the advantages of trees.
As declared on a sign on South Golden Road, City of Golden has been recognized as a Tree City USA for 35 years. This designation means that we have met four core standards of sound urban forestry management: (1) maintaining a tree board or department; (2) having a community tree ordinance; (3) a community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita; and (4) celebrating Arbor Day.
