Wondering how to get involved in your community and with SCCA? Join one of our Action Teams! We have several to choose from: Social Justice Book Club, Civics Learning Club, Weekly Trash Pick-Up, Adopt-a-Highway, Community Garden, SCCA Happy Hours & Social Gatherings, Harm Reduction, and Trivia Nights! Email southcountycollectiveaction@gmail.com and let us know if you want more information!
Search for your nearest Little Free Library (some may not be listed on the website) and fill it with books on radical change, remove any moldy or ruined books or any facism-supporting books. If you don't have one near you, think about starting your own!
Is there a project in your neighborhood that needs to be done but government bureaucracy is delaying action being taken? Take action yourself with some neighbors! Clean up the trash on the sides of the road, fix up the basketball court, shovel the area in front of your community mailboxes. In order for communities to thrive, we need to take action. We don't depend on government, we depend on each other.
Through SCCA, we have opportunities to provide rides to meetings for other members. Please reach out to us if you do not drive and need a ride to a meeting. If you are a driver, please consider opening your car for others. You can drive trans folks to their next doctor appointment, immigrants to important gatherings, you can grocery shop for home-bound neighbors, or pick up their CSA subscriptions when you pick up your own. There are many opportunities to provide transportation and safety to your neighbors.
We all know that social media is infiltrated daily by misinformation. Instead of ignoring it, combat it. Ask folks for their sources. Ask them for more information. You don't have to be mean or try to embarrass someone - but just asking these things helps people think about where they are getting their information.
As inflation increases and the FDA dives into conspiracy theories, we have the opportunity to create our own "resistance gardens." Learning to grow our own food and sharing that knowledge with others is crucial in preparing for the future of the resistance. You can start a community garden in a larger, more accessible space or create your own garden on your land. Remember to share with your neighbors the excess of your success.
If you are unable to garden on your own due to space restrictions, bodily limitations, or any other reason, a great place to keep adding to the resistance is through a CSA subscription. If you are unable to drive to pick up your items, ask the farmer if there are others from your area driving to pick up their items - they may be able to help connect you! If you are a CSA subscriber, talk to your farmer and let them know you can pick up CSAs for others in your area if needed!
