Lalancette-Hébert, Mélanie et al. “Selective ablation of proliferating microglial cells exacerbates ischemic injury in the brain.” The Journal of neuroscience : the official journal of the Society for Neuroscience vol. 27,10 (2007): 2596-605.
This study looked at microglia cells and how they are important for healing from a brain injury. In this study they looked at ischemic injuries which would be a stroke rather than a concussion however, this is still relevant to my research. In a concussion ischemic injuries can occur however, ablation is more similar to the effects of a stroke. The study found that the proliferation of microglial cells induced secretions of proinflammatory cytokines. The researchers then go on to say that because microglia cells are inducing proinflammatory cells, there is a possibility for using microglia cells as a treatment for those with a CNS injury. This could help children out with sTBIs.
