Rules & Perks

Volunteer Rules and Perks

Must be at least 18

Individuals under 18 will be considered on a case by case basis for placement in the "Minion" Volunteer Guild. If interested, please see "MINIONS" section below.

Hours/shifts

A minimum of Volunteer hours is based on Volunteer Level and Team assignment

    • You will receive a free, all-access weekend ticket
    • Your hours can be all at once or split into separate sessions – Team Lead will work with you
    • If you want to help for less than the FLOATER minimum 10 hours, we will gladly take your help but you will need to purchase an event ticket.
    • You can earn additional weekend passes for family or friends. One ticket per 10 volunteer hours.

What to wear

    • At least a minimal amount of Steampunk garb is required
    • Full Steampunk garb is NOT required but is appreciated
    • goggles, top hat, OR some other typical Steampunk item added to cosplay or street wear
    • (Our staff can help you with this. Please let us know in advance if you need help.)

Orientation/Training Day

    • You must also attend the Volunteer Orientation/Training Day the Saturday before the event
    • Floaters do not have to attend

Volunteer Badges, Weekend Passes, and other details

    • We are looking into providing Volunteers and Staff with something that will identify them as such ... possibly tags or armbands
    • These identifiers are to be worn at all times then volunteering
    • they are to be removed when you are NOT working your assigned task/shift
    • Each Volunteer TEAM will also have an Team identifier of some sort
    • Volunteer/Staff Identifiers are to be returned to Volunteer HQ or your Team Lead
        • FLOATERS – return identifiers at the end of each shift
        • Team Members – return identifiers at the end of your LAST shift
        • Team Leads, Team Assts, and Staff – return identifiers at close on Sunday

WalkieTalkies

    • To be used by Team Leads and Staff
    • Training and “terms” list
    • Earphones
    • Recharge/replace/help

Stating the obvious:

Behavior

    • Follow the event rules
    • Be polite
    • Be friendly
    • Have fun
    • Do your drinking after your assigned shift
    • Work together
    • COMMUNICATE: with each other and with SN Staff
    • Don’t just complain: provide Staff (not attendees) info AND possible solutions when you can
    • Understand that some problems should be addressed AFTER the event or in private
    • Understand that some things are the way they are for a reason
    • General FEED BACK from everyone will be welcome … email it to Bixby AFTER the event

Photographers

    • There is a whole team of approved SN Photographers
    • They will be taking a LOT of pictures
    • Do not assume that everyone with a camera is part of the SN Photography team
    • We will NOT be adding to the Photography Team during the event; they are vetted in advance

Questions

    • You will be asked lots of odd things
    • Don’t be afraid to say that you do not know the answer; but that you would be willing to try to find out
    • Don’t just make stuff up!

Minions

    • Yes we have a few kids on our Minion Crew
    • They are mostly the children of SN Staff
    • There is a vetting process for these kids and selection is done WEEKS before the event
    • They are not our slave labor BUT if you ask them NICELY for something they will do their best to help you
    • Do not give them complicated tasks. It is better to ask them to simply go to the house and ask for a roll of paper towels (and remember to tell them to bring those towels back to you … that part is not always obvious to a kid) Do not tell them to find a specific SN Staff member to ask where you can get the towels for yourself. I guarantee the Minion will never find the staff member, then they will not remember what you needed, and IF they actually get an answer they will not remember that they need to take the info back to you … or they will forget where you are. Keep it simple: go to the HOUSE, ask for PAPER TOWELS, bring them back to me at the SALOON.

As soon as you arrive

Figure out where all the important things are located … because you will want to know and you WILL probably be asked by someone!

    • Get a program and figure out how to read it … seriously
    • The location for your assigned shifts
    • Restrooms (all of them)
    • Stages/areas by name
    • Names of key SN Staff (will be covered at Orientation)
    • Where to find Solutions Team (what they are wearing; so you can easily find them if you need them.)

PERKS

  • Your Volunteer Hours give you a unique, behind the scenes glimpse of Steampunk November
  • Access to most parts of the grounds (Exception: the house --- Hospitality Teams 1&2 and Team Leads have limited access, Staff are the only ones with full access)
  • YOUR WEEKEND PASS --- we want all of our Volunteers to experience all aspects of the event, have time at the event to share with friends and family, and to simply HAVE FUN!
