The following is an in-depth guide for the second area of Metroid.
Go down and go to the left and through the door. Here, you'll find Gerutas as a new enemy.
These guys will pretty much stay at the top of the screen, so they are pretty much never a problem. You'll also encounter Polyps.
You won't take too much damage from them, and they go in the same arc every time, so just focus on avoiding them. Keep going left and grab the missiles. Go left and bomb through the wall. Go left and through the door. Go down and through the right door when you come to it. Go right and grab the missile expansion. Go back to the elevator room and head right this time. Go past the clouds to the right, and you'll find Squeepts.
They will jump up and down out of the lava. You can freeze these and use them to hop over things. They also have multiple variants. Go all the way to the right. Here, we can go into the door and up the shaft. Go into the first left door you find while going up. Go left while bombing the wall to go through and using missiles on the door to go through and get extra ice beams if you don't have it already. Bomb below it and go through the pipe. In here you'll find a new enemy, the Multiviola.
These guys just bounce around in diagonal patterns. You can freeze them to get to new locations and areas. For now, just go past it. In the next room, you can shoot the blocks above to break them. The strategy is to break a few so that you can step in them, shoot upwards will constantly jumping.Eventually, you'll reach the top, and you can go right. In this room, freeze or destroy the Multiviolas with missiles. Bomb through the right wall and roll through to the other side. Keep heading right and through the door. Here, bomb through the floor, go down, and go through the left door. Keep heading left to get three missile expansions. Come back out, drop down to the very bottom, and head through the left wall. Keep heading left until you find a wall. You can bomb through this wall in order to reach the two missile expansions. Go all the way back out to the shaft and bomb through the floor. Go down and through the left wall. In here, you find a couple dragons.
These guys shoot fire into you, but they wont shoot if you jump high enough. If you're having trouble jumping from it now, you're about to get something that will help with that. Go to the left and shoot through the door, inside will be the High Jump Boots. You can use these to help jump to new places. You might want to get the Varia now if you didn't get it earlier. Bomb through the ground here and go through the pipe and go left. You can freeze and use High Jump to get over each of the jumps. Keep going left until you've gone through the third door. Shoot through the ceiling and jump through. Go left through the blue and the red door to get the Screw Attack. This is the most useful upgrade that you can get. It makes you invincible if you jump while running left or right. Go back out to the right, and bomb through two floors. Go to the right and you should find a bunch of Gumdrop looking platforms. Keep going right and you'll find a wall. Bomb through this wall and keep going right through the door. Bomb through the floor here, the lava is fake. In this room, go left and keep going to the left. Here, you can bomb through the wall to get an Energy Tank. Keep going to the right back, and fire the ceiling to get in. Go left and bomb to get into the wall. Keep going all the way left until you reach a shaft where you can't go left anymore. Bomb through the fake lava and fall to the bottom of the shaft. Go into the right door and go right through another door. Bomb through the floor and go down. Go right through the door and grab the missile expansions. Go left and through the door. Go up and fire the ceiling to go through. Go right through this room, but be careful not to fall. Eventually, you'll reach a hallway. Bomb through the floor and go left through the blue door and the red door, but DON'T grab the item inside. You've been led here and are given a choice. You can take the wave beam and leave the ice beam behind, or keep the ice beam and leave the wave beam. The Wave Beam is four times as powerful as the ice beam, but as stated earlier, it isn't as important. It can also shoot through blocks. The Ice Beam is better because you can freeze any enemy to get to places easier, and you can defeat/dodge Metroids. Go back to the right and up to reach a hallway. Go right for a missile expansion. Now, you've gotten everything in Norfair, so you can either go to Kraid's Hideout or Ridley's Hideout. This guide will assume you're going to Kraid's Hideout. To get to Kraid's hideout, go all the way to the starting spot in Brinstar. To the right, there's a room with a bunch of breakable blocks. Keep going down and you'll find a door to the right. Go in and down to enter Kraid's Hideout.
