SJ24 Fleet Scoring

Seattle San Juan 24 Fleet Scoring

2018 update

General

For each of our trophies (Round the Buoys trophy for Lake Washington evening races, the Salt Water trophy for regattas on Puget Sound, and the Fleet Championship trophy), we award the trophy to the boat with the lowest score in each event and provide awards for the top three finishers in each event. No ties are broken except for first place.

If there were a tie for first place, the tie would be broken as set forth under each event below, and the boat with the next best score will be given a third-place award (if two or more boats have the next best score, then they each shall receive a third place award).

If there is no tie for first but a tie for second, then each of the tied boats will receive a second place award and no award will be given for third place.

If there is no tie for first or second but a tie for third, then each such tied boat will receive an award for third place.

2018 Racing

For 2018, the awards will be based on the Wednesday evening racing on Lake Washington conducted by CYC, PSSR, POD, the SJ24 North Americans, the Lake Fall Regatta and PSSC. A minimum of three Seattle Fleet boats must sail in an event in order to include the results of that event for an award.

1. Awards for Wednesday night racing on Lake Washington during the year

The Fleet will use scores for each night of racing as scored by CYC, provided that the discarded scores (throw-outs) scored by CYC shall be included and the series scores computed by CYC shall be disregarded. Each boat will use its lowest scores for the number of races equal to (to the nearest whole number) 70% of all completed evening races held on the Lake during the year for the SJ 24 fleet. For example, if the SJ 24 Fleet sails in 50 completed evening races in a year, then the scores would be based on a boat’s lowest scores for 35 races; if the Fleet sails in 48 or 49 evening races in a year, then the scores would be based on 34 races; and if the Fleet sails in 51 or 52 races, then the scores would be based on 36 races.

Each Fleet boat will be ranked in order, with the lowest cumulative score first, with the second lowest cumulative score second, and so on for each Fleet boat that participates in the Wednesday night racing.

Ties for first place will be broken as follows:

First, all evening races in which both boats sailed will be reviewed (including races discarded by either boat in determining their cumulative scores) and the boat that finished ahead of the other boat the more times will be awarded first place. Races in which either boat was scored DNC will not be used in this tie-breaker.

Second, if the boats are still tied, then the tie-breaker used in Appendix A8.1 of the current Racing Rules of Sailing will be used.

Third, if the boats are still tied, then both boats will be awarded first place.

  1. Awards for the regattas held on Salt Water during the year

As the Fleet has scheduled four Salt Water regattas for 2018, then a boat must sail in at least three regattas to win an award.

In determining these awards, the position of each Seattle Fleet member will be ranked for each regatta only against other Seattle Fleet members. In determining this ranking, the finishes of each boat will be determined by the appropriate Race Committee but the regatta will be rescored by reviewing the performance in each race of the regatta solely among Seattle Fleet members. For example, if in a regatta Seattle Fleet members scored 2 and 4 in a race and non-Fleet members scored 1 and 3, then in the rescoring the Seattle Fleet members would be scored 1 and 2. Each race in each selected regatta will be so rescored.

The Low Point system will be used to determine the rankings of the boat, using each Seattle Fleet boat’s ranking in the selected regattas, as rescored, as its “score” in that regatta. The Seattle Fleet boat that finishes first will receive 1 point, the Seattle Fleet boat finishing second will receive 2 points, and so on for each Seattle Fleet boat participating in the regatta.

The position of each Fleet member in each of the Salt Water Regattas will be so ranked with the lowest total score in the appropriate Regattas first, the second lowest second, and so on.

The Salt Water Regatta score for each boat will be the sum of that boat’s lowest scores in three Salt Water Regattas if the Fleet participates in four Salt Water Regattas; If the Fleet participates in less than four Salt Water Regattas, then such score will be the sum of that boat’s lowest scores in two Salt Water Regattas.

Ties for first place will be broken as follows:

First, all salt water races in which both boats sailed will be reviewed (including any discarded scores) and the boat that finished ahead of the other boat the more times will be awarded first place. Races in which either boat was scored DNC will not be used in this tie-breaker.

Second, if the boats are still tied, then the tie breaker used in Appendix A8.1 of the current Racing Rules of Sailing will be used, using the places in each regatta as “race” for this purpose.

Third, if the boats are still tied, then the boat that finished higher in the San Juan 24 North American Championship will be awarded first place.

3. Fleet Championship awards for the year

The Fleet Championship will be based on the series scores for the Wednesday evening races on Lake Washington, as scored by CYC, the regatta scores for the Salt Water regattas as scored for the Salt Water trophy, and the scores for the Lake Fall Regatta (scored among the Seattle Fleet boats in the same manner as described above for the Salt Water regattas).

The Low Point system will be used to determine the rankings of the boat, using each boat’s ranking in each Lake Washington series, in each of the Salt Water regattas and in the Lake Fall Regatta. The Seattle Fleet boat that finishes first will receive 1 point, the Seattle Fleet boat finishing second will receive 2 points, the Seattle Fleet boat finishing third will receive 3 points and so on for each Seattle Fleet boat participating in the series or regatta.

Each boat’s ranking will be based on its best scores in any six of the four Lake evening series, the Lake Fall Regatta and the four Salt Water regattas. If any two of the Lake Fall Regatta and any Salt Water regattas are not sailed due to weather or any other reason or are not counted due to a lack of participation, the ranking for each boat will be based on the best scores for any five of the above series and regattas. A boat must participate in at least one Salt Water regatta to be eligible for the Fleet Championship award.

The position of each Fleet member in each of the selected series and regattas will be so ranked with the lowest total score in the appropriate series and regattas first, the second lowest second, and so on.

Ties for first place will be broken as follows:

First, all races in the Lake evening series, the Lake Fall Regatta and the Salt Water Regattas will be reviewed (including any discarded scores) and the boat that finished ahead of the other boat the more times will be awarded first place. Races in which either boat was scored DNC will not be used in this tie-breaker.

Second, if the boats are still tied, then the tie-breaker used in Appendix A8.1 of the current Racing Rules of Sailing will be used, using the places in each series and regatta as a “race” for this purpose.

Third, if the boats are still tied, then the boat that finished higher in the San Juan 24 North American Championship will be awarded first place.
