SJ24 Seattle Race Fleet

San Juan 24 one-design fleet

We race as a one-design fleet on Wednesday evenings on Lake Washington from mid-April to mid-September. The races are professionally conducted by a racing PRO officer from the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle. One-design is a form of racing where all boats are virtually identical in design, equipment and sails. The SJ24 NACA constitution, specifications and measurer's handbook is employed to insure SJ24 Class races are primarily determined by the skill of the skipper and crew. Boats in the SJ24 Class race each other without any handicap calculations, start at the same time, and the winner is the first to cross the finish line.

Six to 10 boats usually race on Wednesday nights. We also participate in selected regattas held at Shilshole Bay on Puget Sound. Trophies are awarded for the Wednesday night round-the-buoy series, races held on Salt Water and a Fleet Championship that covers all the fleet racing during the year.

The Seattle SJ24 Fleet, part of the San Juan 24 North American Class Association, is based at the South Leschi Marina on Lake Washington. Although SJ24s can be found on Lake Union, Shilshole and other marinas in the greater Seattle area.

One Design Sailboat Racing, SJ24 Class, Shilshole, PSSR 2018. The beginning of the video is fun with a crowded start and some energetic action to cross the start line on time. 4 hours of content edited down to 13 minutes with focus on the interesting events on the water.

Map to South Leschi Marina

The South Leschi Marina is located at 150 Lakeside Ave S, Seattle, WA 98144.  Immediately South of the BluWater restaurant. The racing area is on Lake Washington, between the I-90 and I-520 bridges.

NOTE! Parking permits are required in the spots facing the lake and tickets are expensive at about $250. Public parking is available on the street or in the marina parking lot facing the street. If full, you can always find free parking if you head North on Lakeside Ave. In many cases, parking is available in the North marina lot. It is a 5 minute walk to the South marina.

The entrance to the docks is down a flight of stairs at the south end of the parking area. Look for the dumpsters.

San Juan 24 - The boat

The San Juan 24 was designed by famed marine architect Bruce Kirby in 1971, originally as a quarter-ton IOR boat. Over a thousand SJ24s were built by the Clark Boat Company from 1972 through 1982 in factories located in Washington and North Carolina. SJ24s are found in marinas throughout the United States and Canada.

Principal attributes:

While normally raced with a crew of four (some race with three), the boats can easily be sailed by a crew of two, or arranged for single-handed sailing.
