Project Cornerstone is a year-long, comprehensive child advocacy program sponsored by the PTA and taught entirely by parent volunteers. This program, founded in 1999, focuses on providing emotional skills and communication tools to students so they can learn how to effectively relate to one another while still embracing their own qualities. Years of research have identified 41 “developmental assets”. These assets include both external experiences, which provide young people with support, empowerment and boundaries, as well as internal values, which help strengthen their self esteem, personal power and confidence. There is a direct relationship between increasing the number of assets and decreasing the incidence of high risk behaviors such as bullying, violence, drug and alcohol abuse. Attention is centered on making school a safe and caring place where students thrive. Each month, a Project Cornerstone Volunteer (or team) reads a story and leads a corresponding discussion about that month’s social theme. Concepts are further explained through games or art activities.
Time of Year: Monthly - throughout year
Volunteer Hours: 4-6 Hours per month
Type of Work: Brainstorm/reviews lesson plans; coordinates with teacher; gathers supplies; presents to class
Location: Within the classroom
Project Cornerstone needs parent volunteers to help with Friendship Fridays (FF). As a FF volunteer, you would assist Simonds 4th & 5th grade FF students in leading unique activities during recess once a month. These activities discourage conflict during play and invite everyone to feel included. Activities vary but usually include games, arts & crafts, or other fun challenges. We always welcome new ideas!
