Art Vistas is a comprehensive art education program sponsored by the PTA and taught entirely by parent volunteers. This program, founded in 1985, gives students the opportunity to analyze and appreciate historical and contemporary works of art. Each grade has an age-appropriate curriculum that builds on the themes presented in past years. Students see and experience the numerous ways line, shape, color, texture and value can inform a piece of art. World renowned artists of varies cultures and time periods inspire the artwork created by the students themselves in the six project-based art lessons. This “hands-on” approach to education brings art creation right into the classroom. Art mediums include paint, clay, oil pastels, printmaking and photography. For each project, a lead docent and several helpers are needed to present concepts, encourage creativity and foster confidence in every students. All instructional materials and supplies are readily available, so volunteers do not need any experience with art education or craft making. At the end of the year, two works of art from each student’s portfolio are then displayed in the school’s annual art show, Art from the Heart.
