Although massage is widely used today, in fact it is an ancient method of treatment that was well known already 5000 years ago.
The first news about massage as a method of treatment was found in India around 3000 BC. At that time, massage therapy was used to relieve pain and prevent various diseases. There was an opinion that diseases arise due to the fact that a person is not in harmony with himself and the environment. Massage was a way to restore this natural balance.
Later, healing massage techniques were also used in China. Chinese massage techniques evolved as a combination of traditional Chinese medicine, martial arts, and Buddhist, as well as Daoist spiritual yoga training skills and practices. However, the belief that diseases arise due to a lack of harmony and balance in the human body and mind remained the same.
The ancient Chinese are also the founders of acupuncture and acupressure.
A few centuries later massage therapy was also known in ancient Egypt. Reflexology developed. Inspired by the Egyptians, the healing power of massage also began to be used by the ancient Greeks and Romans.
In Greece, massage was especially popular among athletes who prepared their body for competitions in this way.
Hippocrates, who is called the father of medicine, began to treat physical injuries with massage techniques in the 5th century, he was also the first to recommend massages, a healthy diet, physical activity, fresh air and music to his patients as a basis for restoring and maintaining health.
The beginnings of modern massage therapy
In the early 1800s, the Swedish doctor, gymnast and teacher Per Henrik Ling created a method that helps relieve chronic pain. It was a prelude to what we now know well as Swedish massage.
Also, Johann George Mezger is the founder of various massage techniques used today.
Massage in our time
The demand for masseurs increased in the early 1900s. Around 1930, massage therapy became a recognized form of medicine.
Later, as people's awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and a holistic approach to maintaining health grew, massage therapy underwent a significant transformation.
