The FAFSA allows families to be considered for a variety of financial aid at the federal and state level. There are typically four main forms of aid awarded:
Grants: Funds that do not need to be paid back. Usually awarded based on family income level. The FAFSA ensures consideration for both federal and state grants.
Student Loans: Every student regardless of family income level is eligible for a student loan. Repayment typically begins after the student graduates from college.
Parent Loans: Parents usually have the option to apply for a Parent Loan to help cover college expenses. Repayment typically begins while the student is enrolled in college.
Work Study: Students may be eligible to obtain an on-campus job and use the funds earned to help pay for college expenses.
Some scholarship applications may require that the FAFSA be filed, which is why all families are encouraged to complete an application. Students and families have the right to decline any financial aid offered.
When completing the FAFSA, it is important to list all colleges of interest. Once the FAFSA is complete, each college will receive your reported information. Each college will then send you an Award Package listing all forms of financial aid being offered. Scholarships are typically included in the Award Package.
Students may take until May 1 to make their final college and financial aid decisions. You may request an extension of this deadline by contacting the individual colleges.
For help completing the FAFSA, you should contact your colleges' individual Offices of Student Financial Aid for assistance.
