It is important to be aware of symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts in adolescents. Springfield High School provides a depression and suicide awareness curriculum in its Health classes for sophomores. However, it is important to monitor teenagers and to intervene, if concerning behaviors are present.
Common Symptoms of Depression:
Prolonged depressed mood
Change in appetite
Psychomotor retardation or agitation
Change in sleep pattern
Lack of interest in activities
Difficulty concentrating
Feeling worthless or inadequate
Persistent thoughts of death or suicide
When Someone is in Danger:
If you or someone you know is showing the symptoms of depression, the best thing you can do is ask a trusted adult for help.
It is important to see a medical doctor. A doctor can provide a referral or recommendation for a psychiatrist or psychologist for specialized help.
Parents can also ask their health insurance provider for a listing of mental health professionals.
If you or someone you know has harmed or is threatening to harm him/herself or others, seek help immediately by finding an adult, calling 911, or taking that person to a hospital emergency room.
