Accessing Education: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Online Learning

Practicing Research Skills/Applied Learning

This paper was the result of an opportunity I had to do a practicum with Dr. Nicole Johnson of the Canadian Digital Learning Research Association (CDLRA). The CDLRA surveys Canadian College and University Administration, Learning Leaders and Faculty to find out how digital learning is being used and highlights trends, successes and concerns being raised.  I was granted access to the data as it came in, which allowed me to gain a new understanding of how post-secondary insittutions are engaging with digital learning.

This project was extremely beneficial, as it allowed me to identify how technology was used to facilitate EDIDA (SMART Goal Three), but also how technology presented challenges to EDIDA. Additionally, this project provided me with opportunities to learn a new program for analyzing qualitative data (NVIVO), and to create tables and charts in Microsoft Excel using the quantitative data.   In this course, I learned new theories of learning and of research methodology, which provided me with theoretical frameworks for thinking about teaching and researching in new ways (SMART Goal One).  This project also gave me practical tools (SMART Goal Two) for examining how the practice aligns with or challenges these theories.
