Lightning Close Out 2026 NHL Draft by Selecting Max Vilén with 218th Overall Pick

The Tampa Bay Lightning wrapped up their 2026 NHL Entry Draft by selecting Swedish forward Max Vilén with the 218th overall pick in the seventh and final round.

Vilén, a skilled winger from Sweden, spent the 2025-26 season developing in the QMJHL, where he showcased his offensive instincts, speed, and ability to create scoring opportunities. Although selected late in the draft, the Lightning believe the young forward possesses the raw talent and hockey sense to become an intriguing long-term prospect.

Standing 6-foot and weighing approximately 180 pounds, Vilén is known for his quick skating, strong puck skills, and willingness to compete in all three zones. His ability to play with pace while maintaining possession of the puck made him an appealing option as Tampa Bay searched for value in the later rounds.

“Max has a lot of upside,” one NHL scout said ahead of the draft. “He’s a player who thinks the game well, competes hard, and has offensive tools that could continue to develop as he gains strength and experience.”

The selection capped off another productive draft weekend for General Manager Julien BriseBois and the Lightning scouting staff. Tampa Bay added a balanced group of prospects that included forwards Oleg Kulebyakin, Morgan Anderberg, Cooper Soller, and Max Vilén, defenseman Tomas Kralovic, and goaltender Stephan Shurygin.

While seventh-round selections often require patience and development, the Lightning have earned a reputation for identifying hidden gems late in the draft. The organization hopes Vilén can continue that tradition as he works toward earning a professional opportunity in the coming years.

With six new prospects joining the organization, Tampa Bay leaves the 2026 NHL Entry Draft with a draft class focused on speed, skill, and long-term potential. The next step for Vilén and the rest of the class will be development camp, where they will begin their journey in the Lightning organization.
