Hockey fans across Central New York won’t have to travel far to witness one of the sport’s biggest offseason events.

The 2026 NHL Draft is set for June 26-27 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, bringing the league’s next generation of stars to Western New York and giving fans a chance to follow one of hockey’s most anticipated weekends. Buffalo was officially selected to host the event earlier this year.

The draft is expected to be headlined by Penn State forward Gavin McKenna, who is widely projected to become the No. 1 overall pick. NHL analysts have consistently ranked McKenna at the top of the 2026 class thanks to his elite offensive ability, playmaking skills, and hockey IQ.

For hockey fans in Syracuse, the draft represents more than just a showcase of future NHL talent.  Many of the players selected this weekend could spend time developing in the AHL over the next several years, potentially skating in Syracuse or against the Crunch as they work toward NHL careers.

The 2026 draft class is considered one of the strongest in recent years, featuring a mix of high-end forwards, skilled defensemen, and international prospects. Elite prospect rankings place McKenna, Stenberg, Reid, and defenseman Keaton Verhoeff among the most coveted players available.
