8 FEBRUARY 2016
- The epilogue in Saint Joan in Spanish. Teatro San Martín (Buenos Aires), 1983.
- A nice reminder that Shaw's stature (and status) are not so easily matched.
- An interesting discussion of a plausible Shavian influence on Eugene O'Neill. Click on the cover, then click on the drop-down menu that reads "front cover," and now click on the chapter "Epistemological Crises in O'Neill..." Now, you just have to scroll down to page 103.
- Do you remember GTG's Project Shaw staged reading of The Doctor's Dilemma at the Shaw Conference in NY? Do you remember during the Q&A with David Staller when I mentioned that the play and its preface are quoted thousands of times in medical journal every year? Well, as Checklist editor I never list these, but here is just a sample from the last few weeks with an available preview:
- A lecture delivered as a Phi Beta initiation at Boston University that links Shaw with unexpected mythological forerunners (go to page 51 for the Shaw reference).
- Aspects of the Pygmalion Myth Transformed in The Shape of Things by Neil LaBute (Grad students all over the world are interested in Shaw, it seems. This one is from the Czech Republic).
Now to Shaw's Contemporaries:
- Rare footage of Ellen Terry (no audio).
- Lillah McCarthy stars as Doña Sol in "Blood and Sand" at the New Theatre (1921).
And last, but not least, one of those cases of textual serendipity that is worth sharing; or, did you know that Bernard Shaw was interested in the diagnosis of ringworm in school children?.
