My concentration focuses on the human body and the many ways it can be portrayed from simplistic to abstract to realistic.
My concentration developed from very rough abstract faces to more refined portraits including portraits of Bob Marley, Biggie Smalls, and Tupac Amaru Shakur. In image 1, the features of the face are primitive in form. As my portfolio continues, the portraits become entire bodies. Finally in images 11 and 12, the portraits are very refined and realistic. The evolution of my concentration became apparent as my skill at painting the human face grew.
Score and Rational Below:
The work displays a sense of sustained investigation, but the integration of the topic and the work is inadequately considered. There is a superficial investigation of the idea of the human body; a depth of exploration is not evidenced. Repetitious placement of the figure within the frame is an example of this. The three images with full figures (images 5, 6, and 7) all demonstrate central placement of the subject, and the same is true of the portraits (images 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12). Image 2 does vary the composition, which makes it one of the more successful works within those presented.
The work shows limited understanding and application of 2-D Design principles. As noted above, the central placement of the figures limits the success of most works shown. There is little consideration given to positive and negative spaces in the compositions. In images 11 and 12, the painted white backgrounds do not contrast with the positive shapes of the portraits. There is more consideration given to the backgrounds in images 8 and 9, though technical issues distract from the overall effect.
Overall, the work demonstrates limited technical competence with materials and media. The handling of paint in images 1 and 10 is an example of this. There is, however, evidence of some growth in technical competence, particularly in images 11 and 12.
