Gaythorne station opened as Rifle Range in 1916 which was an extention to serve the military camps established in the area for World War One. The line was extended to Samford in 1918 and again to Dayboro in 1920. In 1923, the station was renamed Gaythorne. In 1953, the line was duplicated through the station from Newmarket to Mitchelton. In 1955, the line was truncated to Ferny Grove. The line was electrified to on 17 November 1979.
Gaythorne was named after the property owned by Howard Bliss who was an early settler in the area.
Gaythorne station has two platforms consisting of two side platforms. Platform 1 is for inbound services and platform 2 is for outbound services.
Gaythorne station has four station entrances. Two are on Station Avenue and two are from the carpark on Samford Road.
