BIRD-FRIENDLY COFFEE
What is Bird Friendly?
Bird-friendly coffee is grown in conditions that benefit our migratory birds. The only label on a bag of coffee that can claim strict standards that help our birds is awarded by the Smithsonian. The chart below compares several labels you might see on a bag of coffee, which complicates our choices. Smithsonian criteria for certification of farms, distributors, and roasters are:
100% Organic
100% Product purity—No mixing
100% Deforestation-free
100% of certified farms conserve biodiversity
Why buy Bird Friendly?
This quotation gives one reason: “If you take care of the birds, you take care of most of the big environmental problems in the world.” Thomas E Lovejoy, Former National Zoo Board Member

While the Smithsonian label guarantees that the coffee is bird-friendly, other growers may be raising coffee that meets the same standards but are unable to afford the cost of Smithsonian certification. Many of our Bird Club members have visited small farms and seen farmers who are doing good things for our birds. The local roaster, Farmer to Farmer, visits their small farms in Latin America, and they assure the buyer that the growing conditions are
favorable to our migrating birds.

Farmer-to-Farmer coffee is Bird Friendly, but because F2F farmers can’t afford the actual certification, the bags lack the Bird Friendly label.
