This can be completed as a demondatration or by showing this video to students. This demonstrates how we create artificial light using objects that some of us have sitting in a junk drawer in our house. 

This reaction occcurs becasue the graphite lead is carbon rich so it burns, almost like coal, when electricity runs through it.
