1) Place microwave at the back of the room
2) Have students face forward
3) Make popcorn in the microwave
4) Start timer as soon as students closest to the microwave smells the popcorn
5) Have students put their hand up as soon as they smell the popcorn (this shows students how the smell is travelling from a high to low concentration through diffusion)
6) Stop timer as soon as the student who is farthest away from the popcorn smells it.
7) Discuss how the smell travelled by diffusion
Place 3-4 drops of food colouring in a clear glass or beaker full of water. Discuss with students that the food colouring is highly concentrated when it is in the bottle. When it is placed in the glass of water, the colouring disperses from a high concentration to a low concentration in the water. Students can observe the change in the intensity of the colouring as it goes from high concentration to low concentration.
