Students must achieve 80 % (PNC 320), 85% (PNC 420) & 90% (PNC 520) on the clinical math test before being permitted to administer medications in clinical. There is NO Medication administration in PNC220. Unsuccessful students will attend mandatory remediation. Students will have 3 opportunities to meet this Competency. Students who are unsuccessful after 3 attempts will receive an UNSAT in Clinical.
To be successful in PNC320/420, within the 12 weeks, students must have 3 independent supervised medication administration experiences.
To be successful in PNC520, students must achieve 90% before beginning their clinical placement.
CLINICAL MATH COMPETENCY:
Nurses' ability to do medication calculations confidently and accurately is exceptionally important. To do this, Seneca's Nursing Programs have created a mastery approach to increase your confidence and accuracy! Students must achieve a Passing Grade in clinical math tests BEFORE being allowed to give medication. To be successful, students must demonstrate safe medication administration on 3 separate Clinical Days.
If you have been unsuccessful in your math mastery you will be required to complete mandatory remediation & completion of the Math Module before doing the next test. Students are afforded 3 opportunities. There is support in the Learning Centre for Math from which students can seek help. There is also a Medication Mathematics Website linked in your handbook.
Medication math calculations are an essential skill in clinical practice. This essential clinical skill is outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario in their Entry-to-Practice Requirements. Accommodations (i.e., extra time, exam aids, etc.) are not provided for clinical skills. This is to support patient safety and your ability to demonstrate principles of safe medication practice. As a school, we must be able to sign that you can demonstrate this essential clinical skill to be eligible to write the regulatory exam for your program after graduation. If this is a challenge for you, please seek support from student services to ensure you have the resources to support achieving these criteria.
