Students often want to know how much time a course will take. In general, for every 3-unit course during a regular 18-week term, you should expect 3 hours in class and 6 outside.
However, what happens when your term is less than 18 weeks?
Our short-term courses take a traditional 16-week semester and compress it into 6, 9, or 12 weeks.
"Inside" and "outside" of class are calculated based on the number of weeks.
Online (in-class) work includes interactive lectures, discussions, activities, and guidance on preparing for assessments via Canvas.
Outside (outside of class) work includes reading material, preparing for assignments, and constructing projects or discussion replies.
This time should be factored into your schedule.
The Carnegie Unit mathematically establishes a standard for the amount of work expected from a student (and the instructor) per week in each course.
See the table below for how to calculate the hours per week for a three-unit "lecture" course.
The chart below shows what this means for your course! (click the arrow on the right)
16-week course = 10.5 hours per week
12 week course = 13.5 hours per week
9-week course = 18 hours per week
6 week course = 27 hours per week
California state law upholds this, see California Education Code Title 5, Sections 55002 (a), and 34 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 600.2.
