Our innovative Veteran and Pet Program is a cornerstone of Scales and Tails Pet Rescue's community outreach efforts. This unique initiative brings together rescued exotic pets and veterans, creating mutually beneficial relationships that support both animal welfare and veteran well-being. Through this program, we offer veterans the opportunity to foster or adopt rescued exotic pets, providing them with companionship and a sense of purpose. We also create a supportive community where veterans can connect with others who share their interest in exotic animals, fostering friendships and social connections.

How Does Scales and Tails' Pet Placement Work?

Once we receive an application, we connect with the Veteran to understand their lifestyle, needs, and expectations. Our mission is to provide Veterans with an opportunity to engage mentally and physically through the care and interaction with their pet. Animals give Veterans a sense of responsibility, routine, and focus. Whether it's feeding, grooming, or simply bonding, these pets become a trusted and constant presence in their lives.

Using our tailored matching process, we evaluate the animals in our rescue to find the right fit based on personality, temperament, and the specific needs of the Veteran. While we specialize in reptiles and exotic pets, we also place other types of pets if they better suit the Veteran’s preferences and lifestyle.

If a suitable pet is not available, we leverage our connections with other rescues to ensure the Veteran gets matched with the right companion. The Veteran’s well-being is always the priority.

Once a match is made, we prepare the pet to integrate smoothly into the Veteran’s life. This preparation includes ensuring the pet is healthy, ready, and suited for their new environment.

How Do I Apply for a Pet?

Veterans who provide a DD-214 letter and a note from their health care provider will receive a reptile or exotic pet from Scales and Tails at no cost. Veterans need only ensure they have a suitable habitat, which we will check. To start the process, simply complete the online application.

Fostering Opportunities

Veterans can provide temporary homes for exotic pets, helping them prepare for permanent adoption while enjoying the companionship of a unique animal.

Adoption Support

We assist veterans in finding their perfect exotic pet companion, providing ongoing support and resources to ensure a successful adoption experience.

Animal Care Training

Participants receive comprehensive training in exotic pet care, empowering them with new skills and knowledge about these fascinating creatures.
