GENERAL BODY MEETINGS

Throughout the year, ASCE invites engineering and contracting companies to present about their company's contributions to the world's ever-changing infrastructure. They would often talk about their workplace environment, different positions & their responsibilities, and sometimes even offer internship opportunities to students.  Companies that were invited in the past include Bohler Engineering, Gilbane Building Company, Advance Testing Company & more. 

In addition, ASCE holds meetings that invite engineering professors and alumni to share their expertise in the industry outside of the classroom. The faculty event allows underclassmen to meet these professors at an earlier time to get an idea of what to expect in their future classes. The alumni event also gives current students an idea of what civil engineering majors do after they graduate and tips on how to gain internship/job opportunities. 

ASCE SBU Chapter holds social events that allow SBU Civil Engineering students to connect and get to know each other. In one of such events, we held a team competition for building the strongest tower out of paper. During Midterm and Finals seasons, we hold destress events to allow students to relax during these stressful times. In these events, we often give out food and members get the chance to play board games or video games such as Jackbox & Minecraft. We also take part in social events with companies such as Bohler Engineering to introduce our members to people in the industry in an informal setting. 

ASCE SBU Chapter also holds field trips to construction sites and local professional offices. The purpose of these events is to expose students to the practice of civil engineering outside of campus. One of such fields trips is our visit to the Langan office in New York City. After giving us a presentation about their company's specializations, they gave us a tour of the High Line, an elevated linear park created on a former New York Central Railroad. 

ASCE SBU Chapter often holds events with the ASCE YMC Long Island Branch. They are ASCE members 35 years of age or younger, who reside or work in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Their engagement in our chapter has helped our members develop professionally. One of our event collaborations is the Resume Review, in which they reviewed our resumes and gave us resume writing tips. We also have social events with them such as the YMC Game Night in which our members got to network with them while playing board games.
