Evaluate your community

How do the businesses and organizations in your community succeed at being age-friendly? Here are some questions to consider.

  • Are there places to sit while waiting? Or places to set your groceries/packages/items?
  • Are the chairs sturdy? Do they have arms to help someone stand up?
  • Is the washroom easy to access and use?
  • Is there a service desk to go to for asking questions?
  • Does the environment consider people who are hard of hearing? Is the background noise or music too loud?
  • Are signs visible and easy to read?
  • Are the staff considerate of an aging person's needs?
  • Are there sturdy rails or banisters along the walls?
  • Are there many stairs? Are they safe?
  • Does the floor get slippery easily?
  • How are the aisles? Wide? Clear of clutter?
  • Do they have automatic doors? If not, are they heavy and awkward?
  • How is the outside of the building maintained during the winter?
  • Are the sidewalk curbs sloped or have a ramp?
  • Is the parking area well-lit and easy to navigate?
