SAINT ANDREWS – With assistance from Tennis NB, Saint Andrews will host another provincial Masters Tennis Tournament this August.

“Between the two of us we run the event,” said Derek Stafford, a member of the executive committee who happens to play in the tournament himself. “It’s really turned into one of the more popular ones. SaintAndrews is not a bad place to be stuck for a weekend.”

Hosted at the Saint Andrews Community Tennis Courts, Stafford says the players can look forward to four nice courts and a friendly atmosphere.

The tournament has been popular in previous years attracting close to 90 players from across the province, and some from away.

“Some of the better players from around the provinces compete. It’s normally pretty good tennis,” said Stafford. “There’s a number of locals.”

Depending on this year’s turnout, Stafford says it’s possible for the age groups to be combined, in order to make the tournament more competitive.

The tournament runs Aug. 5-7, and play on the Friday is dependent on registration and weather. Finals are set to take place Sunday.

“It’s all reliant on weather,” said Stafford. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Stafford says it’s hard to predict how many players they’ll see this

year. In previous years they’ve received a flurry of last minute sign ups.

“It could be interesting purely because the COVID situation has changed somewhat,” he said.

This event is one of several masters tournaments held throughout the province during the summer.

Many players compete in a variety of the tournaments as they work toward improving their provincial ranking.

All matches are free for the public to watch and include singles, doubles, and mixed doubles in the 30+ and 70+ age categories.

“There’s often good support,” said Stafford, explaining that support is split between spectators and local businesses.

Every final in each category in both age groups will receive prizes. Interested players can register throughTennis NB by Aug. 2 at 11:59 p.m.
