The chart below shows the official daily USD-CAD Exchange Rate as red dots, and the exchange I got on my credit card. Even though our credit card does not have a foreign exchange fee (typically of 1 to 3 % that most credit cards charge), they still generally managed to scalp a fraction of a penney per dollar per transaction.

The other interesting conclusion about this chart is just how much the exchange rate can change in a 3-month period. As the USD kept falling against the CAD, we were happy to exchange $1,000 USD for CAD at the beginning of the journey.
