We first became aware of the Gaspé Peninsula as a tourist attraction from an article about the large Northern Gannet population located near Percé that we read back in the mid-2000s. Finally, in 2017, we had a window available to not only visit the massive bird colony located on the tip of the peninsula, but to explore the entire peninsula, slowly, and by vehicle. Specifically, in a 32 foot (9.75 meters) Northwood Arctic Fox fifth-wheel trailer mated to a 2002 Ford F-350 pickup truck.

We began planning our excursion in earnest during the winter of 2016/17. We were in Florida at the time and we asked Canadian snowbirds we had met about the Gaspé. We also made inquiries on RV-related user-groups and forums on the internet. Those who had been to the Gaspé said it was wonderful, but we could not get any consensus about road conditions or campground availability. The feedback we received was encouraging, but left a lot to our imagination. For example, we heard the roads were great, but not for large vehicles and RVs. We heard that there were campgrounds with full hook-ups, but we would need to make reservations months in advance especially to accommodate a 32 foot fifth-wheel. And that we had better learn some French!

To our delight, however, those truths were dependent upon some contexts that largely did not affect us during our 3-month, mostly spontaneously-planned journey up the left (St. Lawrence) side of the Gaspé Peninsula, down the right (Bay of Chaleur) side of the peninsula, and across New Brunswick to the Bay of Fundy.

Ark-n-Tina's bottom line advice? Go! The Gaspé is beautiful. It's easy to get around. It's ready-made for RV travel. It is remarkably uncrowded. And you can learn all the French you need on the fly.
