I learnt a lot of info about timber and now I want to give a part of information to you. So, from DT lessons I know that wood classes are divided into 3 groups.
+ I want to show you my thoughts about "activity 1" - how can I solid wood planks into a one huge dining table?
Softwoods.
Pine - сосна.
Spruce - ель.
Douglas fir - пихта.
Larch - лиственница.
Cedar - кедр.
Hardwoods.
Oak - дуб.
Ash - ясень.
Mahogany - красное дерево.
Teak - тик.
Birch - береза.
Beech - бук.
Manufactured boards.
Plywood - фанера.
Marine plywood - водонепроницаемая фанера.
Aeroply - аэроплай.
Flexible plywood - гибкая фанера.
Chipboard - дсп, доска.
MDF - мдф.
Where are they living?
Hardwood trees are growing in warm countries around the equator. Softwoods are rising near two poles.
manufactured boards are used in factories, to create furniture, design projects and accessories. They are stable, not offered by the temperature (because people are preparing timber) and could be available in long, wide boards of uniform thickness and quality.
Also, timbers are made from trees.
There are - deciduous trees (green leaves in summer, orange autumn - spring) and coniferous trees (always green leaves, who are called needle type).
Woods are fibrous materials made up of plant cells and resins.
Wood is a natural material and one that can be used in its green state i.e. when it has been recently felled or cut down. Wood is hygroscopic meaning it gives up moisture in a dry environment and takes in moisture in a wet environment. As a result Wood is always prone to be unstable as it can shrink and expand depending on the moisture conditions. Trees grow from the outside inwards making a new layer each year (hence annual rings). As a result the weakest wood is just inside the bark while the heartwood is the most stable and dense section of the tree.
Conversion to timber.
As soon as possible after felling the tree should be converted into usable timber.
Natural wood is only available at the maximum width of the tree it came from.
There are two main methods of converting timber: Through and through (or Plain or Crown sawn) which produces tangential boards and Quarter Sawn which produces radial boards.
drying process.
peeling process.
slicing process.
Hardwood is more expensive than softwood and is used in more quality joinery jobs, expensive flooring, or outside areas which are exposed to the weather like front doors.
It is often used on expensive window frames as it looks great and lasts for years.
On floors it's very hard wearing.
Being harder it's much harder to work with but you can get a great finish on.
It doesn't split as easily as pine.
What about a large dining table?
So, If we need to solid timbers from one tree, we must hide the boundaries of wood pieces, so! WE can’t use screws and metal angles.
I want to show you how I can make a huge table from planks.
There are schemes and plans for making processes.
The first thing that I want to say - all furniture from wood that you want to do - you can make by using mouldings.
So, firstly - I want to say that for doing any work with furniture and indoor design, will be better to using a MDF brick like a mould for table and oak, mahogany and birch like materials, because their properties could help you with creating high quality, strong, useable, "rich looking" furniture.
Triangle fasten. I drew 2 pieces of wood and cut the triangle form in the first plank. After, cut a space in the second timber. The last step of matching these pieces is to add a wood glue between this construction and seal them.
Zig zag fasten. So, for this type of sealing two planks you need to cut a zig zag form in pieces and after, add wood glue and press them.
The third way to create a table from planks - use a MDF sheet of wood like a base, ground for a future table and put planks on the foundation. Next important thing, if you’re doing table by this variation - textured carving on the side. It can help you with fixing planks and making this construction stronger.
