Working with metals is a hard process, where everyone needs to be careful and pay attention to their safety. It will be my first working experience with pewter and casting. As an idea I took a jewellery sphere, because the first and most strong association with metals is about accessories and beauty. Also, jewellery from pewter will have a rough surface with relief lines and that’s things, that I want to achieve.
Mould for casting - sketch.
I want to describe the process of doing my own jewellery by steps.
Firstly, I drew my initial idea about jewellery - how it will look like, size, plan of cast and what I want to draw specifically. I did a fast sketch in ProCreate and, without spending a lot of time, started to cut out two moulds. I used my improvisation and feeling as a metre of success and bonders of the future outcome.
Inspiration comes to me from works with a grunge, “outdated” jewellery with an amazing colours gradient, textural plan and relief. This type of jewellery is made from pewter specifically, because this ,etal has two really interesting properties - it’s a safety metal (despite its reaction to oxygen) and also, this metal is really good for interactions with it.
Alicia Hannah Naomi is a creator, who did this type of jewellery and inspired me more that onther people. I took her rings works as a base for outcomes.
For doing moulds, I used two MDF sheets, ruler, pencil and dremel. Idea was to make a flower and a star. I’ve chosen these items (objects) because of an important reason - my favourite childhood memory, but inspiration and memory as well came to me after I saw a Michelen star - flower. (association line)
Dremel work was really long and dusty.
Main issue was about controlling this machine and power of pressing, because the dremel could bounce off the mould and it could damage me. As a result, I had these moulds with 2 patterns. I also did a space on the second MDF piece, because I didn't want to do a thin and brittle final product.
Taping and squeezing two moulds is a responsible process. It is caused by danger of flowing off the Pewter and accidents with burns or ruined casts. For a high - quality preparation process, I got up on this mould by knee and after, with this pressure, started taping this brick. Final step of preparation - fix all construction by clamp. Now, construction is ready to be filled with pewter.
Filling mould is the easiest process, the two things that I needed to do - push 3 buttons, wait until it hit up and push a tiny lever down. (as a secret I want to say that I re-do this work 2 times, because I tried to pick up proportions and thickness of two details.)
Success!
Cutting, polishing and doing a gradient.
As an initial piece after the pewter filling, I had a couple of irregular, extraordinary bits of metal with specks of MDF. Working plan was - separate them, remove dust, polish it with sandpaper, drill some holes in both of them and make them more careful by using a file, do a gradient with metal polisher and spinning brush, remove a dark (coloured) layer from some areas and polish final construction.

Removing dust + sandpaper work.
Drilling holes + tonal work.
Polishing, cleaning, preparing.
I also made an acrylic rack from a piece of transparent acrylic sheet and hot wire strip heater. I turned it On and waited about 40 seconds for every place where I wanted to fold this piece. Afterwards, I bent it and fixed it.
As a final step of my work - I added two chains and fixed them in special places.
Here are some photos of the process and final result.
